Sculpture for a stop-motion puppet, in progress (update—see March 15 post). The color of the beads is arbitrary; they’re just there for texture. Eventually a mold will be made and the finished puppet will be cast in pigmented silicone.

I’ve had a strong interest in Montreal comics since being introduced to Henriette Valium’s work in 2003; this interest was bolstered when I attended the 2005 Toronto Comic Arts Festival, where I met Billy Mavreas and some of the artists associated with L’Oie de Cravan. The indie comics scene in Montreal has had long relationships with French publishers like L’Association and Le Dernier Cri, and the comics output there is, on the whole, risky and productively art-damaged. Moreover, many of the scene’s artists make comics as part of broader art practices, and that’s the phenomenon I wanted to explore with this exhibition. So, I’ve borrowed collages from Juile Doucet and Henriette Valium; drawings from Billy Mavreas and Carlos Santos; prints from Simon Bossé and Leyla Majeri; mixed-media work from Billy, Line Gamache and Rupert Bottenberg; paintings from Richard Suicide; sculptures from Hélène Brosseau; and an animation from Obom. The exhibition takes its name from Obom’s film, which chronicles her upbringing in Montreal and Paris. For our show, the phrase “Here & There” is meant to evoke the simultaneous embrace of comics and fine art, New York and Montreal, English and French.

If you’re in New York, please attend the reception on Sunday, 4/22, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm!

Here’s a brief animation test I made this past December, using a puppet I designed and built over the preceding couple of months.

Here I am talking about Dungeons & Dragons for a panel at Allegra LaViola Gallery in 2010, moderated by Tavis Allison. Participants included Tim Hutchings, Casey Jex Smith and Ryan Browning (whose presentation follows mine), with video contributions by Zak Smith and Mat Brinkman.
